April Is Knee Pain Awareness Month

Got Knee Pain?  Know someone who does?  You are not alone!  Unfortunately it’s all too common.

A physical therapy clinic near you, PEAK Physical Therapy & Sports Rehabilitation, is celebrating April as Knee Pain Awareness Month.  Well, we aren’t celebrating knee pain per se, but the treatment of it without use of painkillers and through the use of conservative treatments enabling you to return to your active, dynamic and independent life.

1 in 3 individuals report Knee Pain during their lifetime.  Knee Pain is the Second Most common cause of chronic pain AND is the Leading Cause of disability in people over the age of 50 years of age.  In those aged 60 plus, it is more common in women than men. A nd…For Every Pound that You Are Overweight – Your Knee Must Absorb 4 additional Pounds of Pressure!

So with statistics like that, there is a high probability that you or someone close to you has had knee pain.  What are the most common remedies offered by the medical community?  Painkillers?  No thanks!  Can you say opioid catastrophe?  Rest?  Well, while one is doing nothing the body continues to weaken and become deconditioned.  You want to be weaker and less mobile while hoping your pain goes away?  Surgery?  Remember – surgery isn’t “the fix” – just corrects a problem.

If your first answer was…Physical Therapy – then you have chosen wisely.  Research has demonstrated seeking Physical Therapy for Knee Pain prior to those listed has demonstrated to be the most cost effective & better outcomes in reducing Knee Pain.

On a personal note, I have had 5 knee surgeries.  Why you may ask?  Because of my oh so perfect genetics as given to me by my parents (my orthopedic surgeon said I could say that).  And because I am an “active” participant in life and just not a spectator, I have pushed my body to the limit and sometimes over incurring micro and macro injuries.

Physical Therapy has been my lifeline.  I know what it is to lose all hope – I had an Orthopedic Surgeon tell me to my face at 19 years of age that I would never play sports again…I was 19!  PS…He was sooooooo wrong!  If you have heard that or something similar – come talk to us, we know a path.  Physical Therapy has helped me not only recover but prepare for upcoming endeavors.  Physical Therapy is just NOT only for rehabbing an injury or post-surgical!  It is also preventive and for future movement “check-ups” after establishing a baseline.  Physical Therapy is a multi-dimensional to movement health & wellness.

If you are NOT living your desired Active, Independent, Dynamic Life because of Knee Pain…Come celebrate with us!
